where to see great art in Paris

Where Art Thou ?

Art is everywhere!

Everyone knows that Paris is the place for art. Its museums are legendary. But what about about less conventional venues like a tour of street art?  We at hiphophostels are constantly on the look-out for new ways to renew and refresh your experience here in Paris while  at the same time not forgetting the must-sees of the capital. Here’s where to go to enjoy some great art this winter in Paris 2019-2020.

First-off; Make the L.O.O.P. P. P

The basics; namely the Louvre, the Orsay, the Orangerie, the Grand Palais, the Pompidou and the Picasso Museum.  Of course there are others!  This list is not exhaustive nor exhausting! We’ve cut things down to the essentials so that you can enjoy without burn-out!Résultat de recherche d'images pour "images louvre"

The Louvre, is the starting point for great masterpieces. You might enjoy the architecture of the building as much as the treasures of art and sculptures exposed here. Beyond the  permanent collections, the Louvre has many excellent special exhibits. Right now there is one dedicated to Leonard di Vinci as this year is the artist’s 500nd anniversary marking the death of the artist in France. Reservations are necessary for this exhibit.  Don’t forget! The Louvre is closed Tuesdays. . https://www.louvre.fr/

The Orsay museum is one of the largest museums in Europe with an important  collection of impressionist and post-impressionist art.  Degas is the guest star at the Orsay museum, at the moment,  with an exhibit exploring the artist’s  relationship with the Opera. Until January 19th. Closed on Mondays. https://www.musee-orsay.fr/

Résultat de recherche d'images pour "claude monet water lilies" Monet’s waterlilies and other impressionist treasures are permanent  fixtures of the Orangerie Museum.  A special exhibit in cooperation with New York’s  Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) is consecrated to  Felix Fénélon (1861-1944) , more of a monument than a man, and quite a character as well, who contributed vastly to the artistic world of his time. The Orangerie is closed on Tuesdays and every first Sunday of the month is free! https://www.musee-orangerie.fr/

At the Grand Palais Toulouse Lautrec depicts Montmartre’s cabarets and night life in an exhibit until January 27th. An exhibit of the art of  Greco, depicting a more spiritual, lofty world until February 10th 2020. Closed Tuesdays. https://www.grandpalais.fr/fr

While at the Centre Pompidou, the often disturbing art of Francis Bacon is sharing the spotlight with Boltanski. Closed Tuesdays

The  Picasso Museum is currently hosting an exposition of Picasso’s “Magic Paintings”, a series of paintings spanning  over a period of four years from 1926 to 1930. Until February 23rd, 2020.  Closed Mondays. The  museum is situated in the Marais which is a neighborhood well worth the detour.

Total Immersion in Van Gogh’s  starry night.

This unique exhibition takes Van Gogh to another level.  The works of last ten years,  an prolific period in the artists chaotic emotionally unstable life, are projected in larger than life murals that seem to leap out and  encompass the visitor.  The paintings loom suddenly larger than life as one work of art superposes one another in precise  succession.

Please note that tickets are only available online so book your tickets in advance.  Open every day from 10am to 6pm with special night time hours on the week-ends, go to their site for details: https://www.atelier-lumieres.com/fr/home
